Contained Ecologies
The idea of an island as a closed ecology informed my recent body of work investigating the concept of ‘Contained Ecologies’; this extends to botanical gardens, animal parks, and aquariums. These heterotopias pose critical questions about humans’ approach to nature, and about boundaries and enclosures as instruments of control.
In a time when human impact on the ecosystem is finally gaining traction within public consciousness, re-thinking our relationship with the non-human is a pressing concern.
